Website Design for English artist and professor, David Olivant.

David Olivant (born 1958 in Watford, England) is an artist who’s practice spans over four decades. As well, he has been a Professor of Art at California State University, Stanislaus in Turlock, CA since 1995. Over the course of his career, Olivant’s work has consistently been driven by the artistic process, tenaciously embracing it, challenging it, and exposing its clichés. Most recently, his work has taken the form of relief sculptures — “Heteroglyphs”, as he’s named them — that are built out of deconstructed parts from his older works and found objects.

The artist was in need of a website that effectively archived and categorized his decades worth of artwork, as well as various forms of information and documentation. The design of David Olivant’s website accomplishes these goals by utilizing an adaptive gridded framework for displaying categorized artworks on white backgrounds (replicating gallery walls) into separate pages designated by the artist. Hovering over each work will display their title while clicking through will lead to a lightbox view, both enlarging the work of interest and displaying their medium, size, and year of completion. In addition, informational pages among the site’s navigation bar, cleanly displaying Olivant’s artist statement, curriculum vitae, selected press articles, and a place for visitors to contact him directly.
