Outlier — Through A Set Of Rose Shaded Eyes

Art Direction and Packaging for the debut LP from Bay Area modern black metal band, Outlier.

Through A Set Of Rose Shaded Eyes is the debut LP from Bay Area modern black metal band, Outlier. The record also marks a rebirth of sorts for the band. Departing from their original melodic hardcore sound, Outlier introduces listeners to a new found aggression with a darker compulsive ocular experience. While a realignment in artistic direction has undoubtedly occurred, it has not been coupled with a complete banishment of Outlier’s past aesthetics. Fresh fiendish vigor is intricately interwoven with the familiarity of haunting melodies that, together, manifest as the affectionate confrontation that is this new maturing sound.

The Art Direction and Packaging were created while working closely with Adrian Fonda, the band’s guitarist. Outlier’s desire was to have the album’s artwork evoke a monolithic unitary presence, echoing the accomplishments of Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures album artwork. The result is an amorphous, yet jagged cubic entity that simultaneously elicits both organic movement and rigid stature as it rests within an ambiguous monochrome field of rose-red. The relationship between the typefaces used (Caslon and a dirtied, scratchy Helvetica) simulates apprehension between their competing regal and ragged appearances, visually capturing the campaign of struggle and triumph Through A Set Of Rose Shaded Eyes offers to listeners.
