The Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) is a non-profit consortium of the leading specialized arts and design schools in the US and Canada. Founded in 1991, their mission is to help strengthen member colleges individually and collectively, to inform the public about these colleges and universities, and the value of studying the arts and design. AICAD institutions educate more than 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students each year, plus many thousands more in summer and continuing education programs. Their students are drawn from all 50 US states, more than 60 countries, and over 70% receive financial aid to support their education.
Founded in 1930 and located in Pasadena, California, ArtCenter College of Design is a global leader in art and design education. ArtCenter offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide variety of art and design disciplines. In addition to its top-ranked academic programs, ArtCenter also serves the general public through a highly regarded series of year-round online and on campus extension programs for all levels of experience. Renowned for both its ties to industry and its social impact initiatives, ArtCenter is the first design school to receive the United Nations’ Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status. Throughout the College’s long and storied history, ArtCenter alumni have had a profound impact on popular culture, the way we live and important issues in our society.
The AICAD Symposium is an annual gathering dedicated to advancing teaching and learning in art and design. In 2024, ArtCenter College of Design hosted the symposium, which brought together educators, researchers, and thought leaders from across the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) community. The 2024 symposium tackled pressing challenges in creative and professional practice, addressing critical questions about the evolving landscape of education and design. Through dynamic discussions and workshops, participants explored: (1) AI, Machine Learning and Emerging Technology, (2) New Learners and New Pathways, (3) Pedagogy and Practice, and (4) Graduate Education and Research.
The goal of this project was to visually represent the influx of new and evolving technologies flooding creative industries and shaking the foundation of traditional art and design education. With uncertainties and anxieties at a high-point (particularly around the emergence of generative AI technologies) we aimed to create a visual identity that captures the unpredictability of this moment while providing a positive outlook towards the future. To accomplish this, the core concepts of layering and revealing were introduced to portray the fluctuation and magnification of the alternative spaces and outlooks such technologies produce. In addition, the symposium’s brand utilizes motifs and characteristics inspired by software graphics and digital interfaces to render various forms of information. This familiar tone captures the cultural signifiers found within our every-day online domains, meeting art and design educators where they are at — remaining committed while navigating the complex challenges of preparing their students for the rapidly evolving world ahead. Which traditions will guide them, and where can they find new inspiration as they chart their path forward?
