Website Design, Environmental Graphics, and Art Direction for the new menus and signage at Emmi’s, the hometown restaurant in downtown Sierra Madre, CA.

Emmi's is a hometown restaurant in downtown Sierra Madre, CA, but it’s more than just a place to eat — it's a community hub where both locals and visitors can gather and feel at home. Owned and operated by chef-owners, Matt and Brittainy Turnquist, they take pride in knowing their customers by name and remembering their favorite orders. Emmi’s cares about the Sierra Madre community and is deeply involved in it, regularly supporting local events and initiatives, and always looking for new ways to give back to their hometown. Swing by and say hi next time you’re in town, or feel free to place an order online.

With a consistent increase in popularity and online demand, Emmi’s was quickly outgrowing their do-it-yourself visual resources and required a redesign of their menus and signage systems, as well as the full development of a new restaurant website that could scale with them while staying true to their cozy hometown roots. In addition, these new items needed to work within their existing brand identity, which provided a suite of brand logos and illustrations, two typeface families (Chinchilla by Ethan Dunham and Karla by Jonny Pinhorn), and a specific color palette.

To accomplish these goals, we employed a warm contemporary visual style inspired by the classic American diner. Menus and signage become clean and clear with no frills, but remain soft and human-like, providing familiar comfort and a personal touch. Dining at Emmi’s feels like visiting family friends and their website aims to offer the digital equivalent to that experience. By prioritizing service, providing support, and sharing stories, online visitors get a taste of what it’s like to swing by and say hi at Emmi’s in downtown Sierra Madre.
