Poppy Cake Baking Company is a neighborhood, full-service artisan bakery and cafe located in Sierra Madre, CA. Open daily, Poppy Cake serves fresh, hand-crafted breads and pastries, quick lunches, and take-home dinners. Their selections are made in-house, from scratch with bread that is naturally leavened using sourdough starter and pastries that are baked fresh every morning.
After close to a decade of serving their neighborhood locals in Sierra Madre and expanding online to serve the greater Los Angeles area, Poppy Cake was looking for a visual refresh that revitalized it’s existing brand identity. Spanning a new website and a series of holiday menus, we were given the goal of relaunching the brand with a more modern, youthful tone while not severing Poppy Cake from its established visual history.
To accomplish this, we leaned heavily into the brand’s typography, specifically increasing the use of its display face, Alternate Gothic No2 D, to create bold, eye-grabbing designs and statements. Alongside Poppy Cake’s bright and warm color palette, and a refreshed tone in messaging, a clear formula for creating vibrant compositions and personalized communications emerged. Within the updated website this brand refresh welcomes customers, both new and old, with a spirited and welcoming energy. In addition, the new holiday menus followed suit visually, while intentionally prioritizing an analog system that has customers fill out their own menus with their orders before hand-delivering them back so that they receive a more personalized, neighborly experience.
