Gabrielle Jennings

Website Design for Los Angeles-based writer and artist, Gabrielle Jennings.

Gabrielle Jennings is a Los Angeles-based writer and artist whose work mines our collective unconscious, often through appropriation. The artist has shown nationally and internationally and has been an artist in residence at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin and 200 Gertrude Street Artist Spaces in Melbourne. Jennings also teaches as a core faculty member within the Graduate Art program at ArtCenter College of Design. Recently her work appeared on Writers’ Kingston Online #29 and 7x7la, while her poetry has been published in Olney Magazine, Fence, and Terror House. She’s been honored with support from such organizations as the Art Matters Fellowship, Philip Morris Kunstforderung, and the Samsung Faculty Enrichment Grant. Among others, writers Harold Fricke, Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe, Cay Sophie Rabinowitz, and Jan Tumlir have written about her work.

The artist required a website that could successfully document the vast collection of work that has spanned her career, and remain effective in doing so throughout its continual growth. Jennings’ practice is diverse in nature, traversing through various forms of media, processes, collectives, philosophies, and (un)consciousnesses. The design of the website needed to support and empower the work’s range, not distract from it. This was accomplished through a flexible design that employs minimal grayscale tones, the pliable Forma DJR across typography, and a design system that prioritizes logic and fluidity through a reproducible, yet flexible, layout structure. The result is a website that remains visually consistent while functioning to emphasize the distinctiveness of each artwork to provide unique experiences across each page.
