Ethan Johnson — A DAY AT THE RACES

Website Design for the A DAY AT THE RACES exhibition from Los Angeles-based artist and educator, Ethan Johnson.

Ethan Johnson is a Los Angeles-based artist and educator who wandered New York City’s eighties art scene by subway, feeling the influence of both. Despite almost never showing his art, he has produced it continuously — making work that reveals a genealogy of informed naïveté traceable to the Soho, East Village, and red line trains of that era. A Day at the Races continues to mine the latter’s nomenclature for personal, cultural, and poetic resonance.

The artist required a website that could successfully document and present the work from their most recent gallery show. The site was designed to be an extension of the exhibition and a digital catalog of the work on display that viewers could use to initiate purchases directly from the artist. The design of the website needed to support and empower the work, but not distract from it. This is accomplished through a straightforward design that employs a minimal palette allowing the artist’s work to provide all color and imagery. Through typography, the bold, all-capped Archivo Black and the trustworthy, clean Neue Haas Grotesk Text are coupled together to prioritize emphasis and clarity.
